Our AnimalsBesides welcoming guests to Thung Dong we indulge in and relish typical Thai farm life!
Much of our lives on the farm revolve around our animals, their upkeep and welfare. None are ever used as source of food on the farm or ever knowingly sold for slaughter, so any meat, even fish that is consumed on the farm is obtained from reliable markets. Yes! We love animals and we do sell some to good homes the proceeds of which go directly to supporting our other animals. |
We have four buffaloes, three pink and one grey.
Our three pink buffaloes really are quite beautiful and very popular with the everyone on the farm and our visitors. As you can see they are extremely docile and friendly. Read more about them on our blog Pink Buffaloes. |

Our DogsWe love all animals especially our own on the farm!... but are particularly fond of Izzie our Golden Labrador and Sam, our 'beach-boy' from southern Thailand and, of course Oscar who thinks he's the boss but is actually a cat! Then we also have Louis and Molly who are Beagles and Lucy who is half Beagle but we haven't told her! All of our animals are fully vaccinated. Sam is particularly good at chasing away any predators, such as Civet Cats, that may try to invade the farm at night!
Thung Dong Farm also supports Santisook Dogs & Cats which care for abandoned dogs & cats and solicit good new caring homes. If you would like to discuss the possibility of adopting a dog and giving a new life to ‘man’s best friend’ then very many thanks and please use this link to get in touch www.santisookdogsandcats.org |
PigsWe have very few 'Moo Doi" - Mountain Pigs now, just Maggie and Ethel who are quite old and are in retirement after bearing scores of youngsters - they make wonderful companions if cultured from a young age. However, they do need plenty of uncultivated ground to forage.
Note : We actually lost Maggie and Ethel due to old age and at this time we haven't decided if we will raise more Mountain Pigs....I think that we will but not just yet! |

CowsWe have a small herd of cattle whose main purpose on the farm is to eat the grass and and produce fertilizer ... what a life!
|
Horses
Our two horses, Anna and Meika are currently away on leave at a resort near Phayou and hopefully will have found boyfriends before too long! They were rescued from the market. Anna, with the blond mane, and Meika who doesn't bite if you have a carrot in your hand! They are full of mischief, especially Meika who's fond of raiding the village store!... we hope that they can return 'home' in the not-to-distant future!

A cool video by Keiji and Ros taken at feeding time for some of our birds! Here we have Mallard ducks, male and female, Muscovy Ducks, some of the White Chinese Geese (the rest were sitting on their eggs!), Guinea Fowl (Pearl, White Breasted and a Lavender in there somewhere!) but excluding the rare White variety who live in a special hutch and, of course, the odd chicken or two!...and that's Hero hoping to snatch-up any leftovers and Sam wanting some attention! The only birds missing were the Fantail Pigeons, Jack the Mynah Bird and our shy Lesser Whistling Tree Ducks who are fed separately. Thanks for the video guys!

Guinea FowlPerhaps we are one of the largest breeders of Guinea Fowl in northern Thailand. We have several varieties including relatively rare pure white birds and lavender plus Pearl and White Breasted. They are characters unto themselves but when summoned for supper and several hundred pairs of wings take to the air it is a sight to behold! Guineas make wonderful gardeners; no scratching, no smell and expert at removing bugs from leaves without harming the plant itself.....Guinea Fowl compliment any large garden.
|
Geese
We have a family of Chinese White and brown Geese; perfect security guards and snake deterrent and what would a farm be without them!? We do sell Geese to caring owners who are aware that they can destroy a garden, in more ways then one ... in a matter of days!

|
DucksWe breed several species of duck, Mallards, Moscovy (Cairina Moschata), Aylesbury and Lesser Whistling Tree Ducks (Dendrocygna Jvanica)! Not only does their presence enhance any lake but we know its spring when the ducklings take to the water! We do sell ducks but only for ornamental purposes!
|
Fantail Pigeons
Memories of country villages! These birds are clean and a pure delight to watch and which will augment any garden that is devoid of cats and eagles! Beautiful birds that become very attached to people once they know where home are food are!
We do sell Fantail Pigeons in breeding pairs. |

|
ChickensWe have many varieties of chickens on the farm and The Thung Dong Golden Emperor which is our very own hybrid chicken! Beautifully proportioned and beautiful to watch! Normally hangs out with the pigs though!
Then there are our 'Silkie' chickens, stunning looking birds which we are breeding to release to Free-Range in the cool season after the rains. We started with just 3 and now have over 60! Best not to forget Henry who was raised with some baby Guinea Fowl (his mother laid his egg in a Guinea Fwol nest!) and still thinks he is! |
Other AnimalsWe were privileged and enjoy the company of various other animals which have included :
Lucy, a wild Boar; Rik, the Indian Civet Cat, now in a breeding program at Chiang Mai Zoo; Cargo - a Brown Hawk Owl (now released after recovering from being 'grounded by high winds)sever hundreds of Fish in the two lakes; Indian Hedgehogs; many semi-wild rabbits; a menagerie of bird-life a guest bequeathed a snail called ‘Buddy’ and last but not least tiger and bear paw prints high in the mountains! |
|
Our Farm Grown CropsWe produce a variety of crops some of which we sell to support the farm; some we refine for our guest during their stays with us in order that they may enjoy fresh, organic produce and other crops we share with our animals. We specialize in producing our very own Thung Dong Arabica coffee, a variety of health drinks and vegetables….if the rabbits haven’t eaten them first!
